Well, did I "mind" that they were willing to absorb the cost of building their own mounting system? Did I have to even think about that, other than feeling a little guilty that they were going so far out of their way to be sure I was completely happy with the finished job? Uh, no. The rods that were sent only mounted on the ends not good enough, in their opinion, because these old walls just might not be sturdy enough to hold them over time. When the hardware and fabric arrived and were installed, they took one look at the finished result of just one set, and then asked me if I'd mind (yes, that's what the word was, "mind" - remember that in a moment) if they'd take the others back to their shop to rebuild the rod mounting/backing so that the draping fabric would hang "perfectly" and so that they'd be mounted directly to studs. Not only was it painless, but I actually enjoyed every moment, learned a lot, got just the effects for which I was hoping, and met some delightful people with deep integrity as well.Īs just one example: the drapes for our Great Room were designed to be much higher and wider than the actual windows to balance the incredibly high ceilings. Ann and Bill managed to walk me through the process of finding just the right window coverings and treatments throughout my entire home (there are LOTS of windows, especially after we added a Sunroom/Solarium). While I have my own tastes and preferences for styles, I have NO experience in working Victoriana into my decorating. We've recently moved into a very old Victorian home. They really have shown me all of these traits. Please don't be overwhelmed or even put off by the superlatives I've used. “The killer story is a great scientist with a great idea, but for sustained success you have to build systems to manage the information and the data,” he says.“These are the most professional, respectful, creative and talented people with which I've ever had the pleasure to work. So he was relieved to sign on with Benchling just over a year ago, even though, as he says, it’s “not an insignificant expense” for a startup. Jason Ryder, cofounder and chief technology officer of Joywell Foods, which makes foods based on naturally sweet proteins, has been down that path before. “The alternative to Benchling is often building it all yourself.” “There is no one-stop shop,” says Sana Biotechnology CEO Steve Harr, whose firm is a Benchling customer. Academic researchers continue to get the product for free, while companies pay anywhere from $15,000 for a small biotech to millions for a large corporation. These firms use Benchling’s cloud-based platform to help them track, measure and forecast their scientific work. Today, Benchling counts 450 companies as customers, including Regeneron, Gilead, Sanofi and Corteva Agriscience. “Foundational technologies on biology are being developed, similar to the way they were on the traditional technology side,” says Sequoia’s Patrick Fu, who led the investment. As the company has grown, it’s added new products, including a data and analytics dashboard that helps its customers gain both scientific and operational insights. But by last summer, the San Francisco-based company became one of 25 to make the cut for Forbes’ Next Billion-Dollar Startups list as the coronavirus pandemic put the spotlight on biotech.Īnnual recurring revenue surpassed $50 million last year, double the previous year, and is expected to double again this year. In the early days, it wasn’t clear what the company’s value might be, and there was a lot of skepticism about software focused on just one vertical.
